They say timing is everything. So is the case for Lars Freisberg, MD. After doing basic research on the retina as a med student, he ventured over to the eye clinic next door where he began exploring the human retina in real life. “Many procedures on the retina were just being developed at that time. It was a very exciting surgical time to join the field so it was a very natural development for me,” he said.

Following medical school in Germany, Dr. Freisberg moved to New York and completed his ophthalmology residency followed by a medical and surgical retina fellowship at the University of Wisconsin.

It wasn’t long before Dr. Freisberg developed a busy private practice in Tulsa. Once again, timing came into play as the number of patients needing care for retinal conditions was growing based on the number of new treatment options available. “No one wants to wake up and suddenly lose their vision. It’s very satisfying to be able to bring clarity to a patient. At the end of the day, our goal is to do as much as we can to improve or maintain their vision.”

Diabetic retinopathy is one of the retinal conditions Dr. Freisberg particularly enjoys treating because it involves working with the patient not just on their eyesight but their overall health as well. “I like surgeries related to diabetic eye disease. They are challenging since they also require careful medical co-management to get the best possible results for the patient.”

In addition to retinopathy, some of the more common retinal conditions Dr. Freisberg treats are macular degeneration, retinal detachment, and flashes and floaters. However, he’s always willing to dig in to less typical cases to find the best solution. “Unusual situations that require cooperation with other colleagues are always a challenge. I find calling upon the retina community to find the best possible solution for my patient to be very rewarding.”

Dr. Freisberg is one of the founding members of Tulsa Retina Consultants and looks forward to expanding access to care to patients across northeast Oklahoma. Tulsa Retina Consultants currently sees patients at their main office in Tulsa with satellite clinics in Muskogee and Bartlesville.
